Tuesdays Unwrapped: Like the squirrels

How many of you have bird feeders hanging from a tree nearby your house?
Well, for those of you that do, you know that you can see a plethora of creatures visit the bird feeder each day. My husband and I recently put a small bird feeder in the tree by our back patio and I adore watching each critter sneak snacks from it. Finches, cardinals, doves, sparrows, robins, chipmunks, and squirrels.

Let's talk about those squirrels. They are not like the cute little chipmunks that feed on the birdseed that's fallen to the floor. No, no. They like to take it from the actual feeder. Nevermind that there isn't enough ledge for them to perch on. We can fill up the feeder in the morning and by evening time it's time to fill 'er up again!

Well, my parents were visiting a couple weeks ago and came up with the bright idea of placing half of a (broken) circulating fan cover over the top of the feeder so the squirrels couldn't get to it anymore. My husband wasn't too thrilled with this at first worried we were going to be "those neighbors." Well...after browsing through our local Ace Hardware, we weren't convinced it was worth the $20 to buy something that looked pretty much the same and did the same job. So, we left it. And it worked pretty well.

For a day.

And then I woke up one morning, looked outside, and saw that DARNED squirrel hanging upside down from the feeder again! We employed many covert scare tactics to get the squirrels to leave the feeder alone, but all for naught. They just kept coming back.

So, why am I sharing this story with you?

I realized today, in the midst of feeling like a complete and utter failure due to my current state of unemployment, that I needed to be like those squirrels. Persistent! Yeah, I've filled out a lot of job applications and it's really tiring rewriting cover letter after cover letter, but in this job market you have to be persistent - like the squirrels.

Recovering from my pity party and amused at the squirrels latest acrobatics, I went upstairs to check my e-mail and found that the director of Human Resources had sent me an e-mail asking me if I could come in this week to discuss the job I had just applied for.

I know this isn't the end of the unemployment road for me. I haven't secured any job yet. But, I know with persistence, I can be that squirrel hanging upside down from the tree with just my legs to hold me and getting exactly what I've been working so hard to get.

Hi, saw your post in (in)courage. I enjoyed reading those last few blog entries. Best of luck with the job hunt - I've been in that place before and can empathize with your frustration. But have faith. God will bring the perfect job if you're willing to wait for it!
Nice to meet you.
